State to Fund Traffic Light Installation at Dangerous Avon Intersection

The plans also include a signalized crosswalk at the Country Club Road and Lovely Street intersection.

Traffic on Lovely Street does not have to stop at the intersection with Country Club and Westmont Roads. It is dangerous at times for cars on either side street to cross or turn onto the state road traveled by volumes of fast-moving vehicles.

But an approved state project could soon make the intersection safer.

The funding is in place to put a traffic light in at the intersection, as well as a signalized crosswalk.

"The state is saying it should be done this summer into the fall," Avon Town Manager Brandon Robertson said Monday.

The state will fund the majority of the project with a 10 percent contribution from the town of Avon, Robertson said.

Pre-construction markings have already been painted at the intersection for utilities purposes, Robertson said.

"This project includes other projects throughout the State of Connecticut and the installation timetable is left up to the contractor," Avon Police Chief Mark Rinaldo wrote in a memo to Robertson in February. "I was advised that the State does not regulate which project the contractor starts first once the award is made. Many factors go into this decision including ordering poles and receiving equipment."

The timetable for the project is tentative and could "extend to the spring of 2014 depending on weather conditions and delivery of supplies," Rinaldo wrote in the memo referencing a conversation with one of Avon's state representatives.
