Waggin' for Wheels Supplemental Appropriation Approved

The new animal control van has been purchased, but there are $3,600 in additional costs to outfit it.

The new Avon-Canton van was purchased last week, but the Avon Board of Finance formally approved $19,000 in funding sources at its meeting in Monday.

, which spearheaded the fundraising campaign to pay for the 2012 Dodge Ram cargo van, donated $18,398.91 to the town as a gift, which the Town Council approved Jan. 19.

The supplemental appropriation evened out to $19,000, the reduced sale price of the car, after the old van, a 1998 Ford Windstar, was sold for $601.09 in a publicsurplus.com auction.

Mitchell Auto Group, of Simsbury, sold the van at a discounted price to the . That model typically runs for $24,770, according to Mitchell record.

The van is being outfitted with features such as a two-way police radio, LED roof lights, emergency lights, a spotlight on the roof, and trays and cage dividers in the interior. The estimated cost is $3,600, which will come out of the Avon Police Department's operating budget, according to Avon Town Manager Brandon Robertson.
