Where 'Wood' You Put the Wood?

Town officials consider hiring contractors to clear brush. In the meantime, residents can leave brush on the curb and permitted landfill members can bring it to the Avon Landfill.

There is no shortage of wood in Avon with all of the fallen trees and branches. But where to put it all?

Town officials ask that residents put their brush on the curbside for now. The Avon Landfill is also open for permitted members to bring brush.

Residents can also bring "chipped and delivered sotrm debris" to Dunning Sand and Gravel, at 105 Brickyard Road in Farmington, free of charge, according to a press release from the town. Contact the company at 860-677-1616 for more information.

At a special meeting Friday, the Avon Town Council authorized Town Manager Brandon Robertson to draft a request for proposal to consider options for brush removal – hiring out, using soley town crews or working with contractors to clear the brush.

Alexander M. Trujillo, deputy Avon Department of Public Works director, and Bruce C. Williams, public works director, brought up the issue of following Federal Emergency Management Agency's guidelines to be eligible for reimbursement. Certain actions, such as charging residents to bring brush to the Avon Landfill would lower the amount of aid the town could receive.

Friday night, President Barack Obama signed off on giving Connecticut additional federal aid.

While FEMA approved Avon's application for partial reimbursement to the $75,000 cost to fix the sewer main on Eddy Street following Tropical Storm Irene, the town has not gotten a check yet. Councilman Doug Evans said that he did not think that the FEMA reimbursement application process and waiting period for reimbursement was affecting Avon's response to clear debris. The main issue has been the lack of CL&P crew to help with the power lines.

Avon town officials plan to focus on removing debris and hanging tree branches that pose a particular threat. CL&P has to shut off the power lines before public works can take branches off of the lines.

The Town Council will have another special meeting Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. in the Selectmen's Conference Room in Town Hall, Building One to review the possibility of hiring contractors to help with brush removal. They are slated to vote at the meeting.
