Pet Funeral, Cremation Services Business Considers Avon Location

On Tuesday, the Planning and Zoning Commission will review Beloved Companions, LLC's application to move onto the Battiston property on Route 44.

A new pet funeral and cremation services business is applying for a special exception to open in Avon near Battison's laundromat on Route 44.

Beloved Companions, LLC founder David Olson, of Simsbury, and managing partner Devra Sisitsky, of Avon, submitted the application in early February. The Planning and Zoning Commission will review the application at its Tuesday meeting.

"Today pets are considered 'Members of the Family' and their pet parents/families recognize the significance in properly handling their death in a dignified, respectful and caring manner," the applicants state in the planning and zoning application. "We also recognize the market opportunity inherent in offering an affordable alternative to direct cremation."

Beloved Companions, LLC, a unique type of business to Connecticut, is looking to move into 369 West Main St. in Avon, a property owned by Donald and Pamela Battiston.

If approved, Beloved Companions, LLC would offer the following services – "transportation from the pet's home or veterinarian's office to the cremation facility," "timely deliver of the cremains back to the home," "purchase options for urns and remembrance keepsakes," "in home euthanasia by a licensed professional," "grief counseling with a certified psychologist" and "cremation services," according to the application.

The mission of Beloved Companions, LLC is to "assist the pet and their human family through the transition process with empathy and compassion while expediating the process of cremation and remembrance," the application states.

"Our proposed Pet Family Center in Avon will welcome pet families to visit to discuss advanced planning needs and select a decorative urn of choice," the business said in the application.

Olson previously had plans to open a similar business, Beloved Companions Funeral Services & Crematory, LLC, with Robert L. Sagarino in Canton, according to Canton Patch. It had Canton Zoning Commission approval to move into the Citrus Salon building on Route 44, but Canton Town Planner Neil Pade previously told Canton Patch "we were told the deal fell through."

The Planning and Zoning meeting is scheduled for Feb. 26 in Town Hall at 7:30 p.m.
