Adam Lebowitz: Sports Stars Are No Longer American Heroes

Spotlighting Avon High School senior mastery projects.

Name: Adam Lebowitz, Class of 2011 graduate

Senior Mastery Project: A picture of Michael Phelps smoking marijuana emerged over two years ago. Michael Vick spent almost two years in prison for dogfighting. And Tiger Woods, well, we all know that story. Is the American sports hero extinct? Through his research, Lebowitz came to the conclusion that athletes are no longer committed to being positive role models for America's youth.

On the subject of Michael Vick: "Athletes today aren’t really being held responsible for their actions as much as they should... Lets say you’re playing AHS football, you wouldn’t really admire Michael Vick, but he's now an MVP just after having been released from jail and [showing] no remorse for his actions... The NFL didn’t really take any action," Lebowitz told Patch.

Are there any decent star athletes these days?: When it comes to the famous Manning family, the answer is yes and no.

"The Manning family basically donates all that they can, but they’re also...big into the strike and lockout of the NFL, which is why although they say they’re pushing for a solution to the problem, they’re still making millions of dollars per year to play the sport they love... People are losing millions of dollars just from this lockout alone. I feel like that overweighs the fact that they do donate money to certain charities," Lebowitz said.

Changing the Channel: As a result of this project, Lebowitz no longer watches ESPN.

Future Plans: He's heading to the University of North Carolina to study economics and marketing in the fall.
