Avon School Board Approves Superintendent's Recommended Budget

The school board voted on the budget at a special meeting on Tuesday night.

The Avon Board of Education unanimously endorsed the budget Superintendent Gary Mala recommended at its special meeting on Tuesday evening.

The school board is requesting a $51,903,086 general fund budget for fiscal year 2014-15, a 2.77 percent net increase over last year.

About $2.7 million is projected in the general fund in non-tax revenue. The board also unanimously approved three other non-tax revenue streams calculating that the school district will receive $975,994 in state federal educational grants in the next school year, as well as $1,297,474 coming in for the school cafeteria fund and $54,000 in the school facilities fund.

The combined gross figure that the Town Council and Board of Finance will see is $54,230,554, which includes projected non-tax revenue from the proposed general fund, school cafeteria fund, federal educational grant and school facilities fund.

When the Town Council recommends a budget, the town and school board budget will be recommended for the Board of Finance's review as a cumulative gross amount.

The public hearing for the whole budget, including the town and school board requests, is scheduled for Monday, April 7, followed by the tri-board workshop on Wednesday, April 9, the town meeting on Monday, May 5 and the referendum on Wednesday, May 15.
