Avon Cancels School Friday as Snow Storm Looms

The National Weather Service has now issued a blizzard warning.

Avon Public Schools will be closed Friday due to the approaching storm, Superintendent Gary Mala announced Thursday evening.

Mala said he reviewed the weather forecast and consulted with weather professionals and area school leaders before making the decision.

The National Weather Service has upgraded its forecast from a blizzard watch to a warning. The blizzard warning will last from 6 a.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday.

"A potential historic winter storm and blizzard is expected to drop around 2 feet of snow Friday into Saturday," the warning on the weather service's website states.

The winter storm could drop heavy snow on the Farmington Valley, "blowing and drifting at times," with wind gusts reaching as high as 50 miles per hour, according to the weather service.
