Avon Superintendent Declines Raise

The Avon Board of Education did its annual evaluation of Superintendent Gary Mala this fall.

After its annual evaluation of Avon's superintendent in November, the Board of Education offered to raise Superintendent Gary Mala's salary by 3 percent.

While Mala thanked the board for the raise, which would have been effective in July, he declined the offer at a board meeting on Dec. 4.

The Hartford Courant reported that Mala made the decision so that the funding could instead be spent on student programming in Avon given the tough economy.

His salary is currently $178,938, the newspaper reported, and the board, giving him a positive review, extended his contract another year to the end of the school year in 2017.

The school board also discussed its proposed budget that evening. On Dec. 18, the board approved the Central Office's recommended $54.2 million combined gross budget, $51.9 million of which makes up its requested general fund.

The Town Council will have the opportunity to comment on the budget proposal before the Board of Finance reviews it along with the proposed town budget.
