[Update] Avon to Play Berlin in State Tournament Quarterfinals

The girls varsity soccer team defeated E.O. Smith 2-1 Saturday.

It looked like Avon was going to win its second round Class L tournament game in regulation off of its goal from senior Erica Primovic, but then E.O. surprised everyone by scoring with seven seconds left in regulation.

"We were pretty devastated by that but fought through the two overtimes," Avon coach Jim Murray wrote in an e-mail. "E.O. Smith had gained the momentum and pressured us for the two 10 minute overtimes."

That meant penalty kicks, a close game for Avon's senior day.

Jenna Donahue netted Avon's first shot and E.O. Smith missed.

Erica Primovic scored again, sending the ball out of reach of the E.O keeper, giving Avon a 2-0 advantage as E.O shot wide.

Third-in-line Grace Lennon fired a strong shot, which was blocked by the E.O. goaltender. E.O. capitalized on its third shot, nailing the ball into the high corner past Avon keeper Kaylan Conrad high, narrowing Avon's lead to 2-1.

Avon's Catherine Jordan scored to widen Avon's lead again to 3 - 1. E.O. placed its shot in a similar location to it's first successful penalthy kick and caught up slightly to Avon at 3-2.

Youn Jae Baek clinched the victory for Avon when she scored her team's final shot, giving Avon the 2-1 game win.

The win comes after a bye on the first day of the tournament, Nov. 10 following a delayed start to the tournament due to the October nor'easter aftermath.

"The team stayed strong and stayed focused on the jobs and that meant the difference in the end," Murray said. "It was senior day due to the storm cancelling our final regular season game. We honored their commitment to the team prior to the game."

The Falcons (13-1-2) will face Berlin (11-3-3) at home on Nov. 15, a longtime rival of Farmington Valley teams.

Avon is ranked second in Class L and Berlin is seeded seventh.

Whoever wins will play either RHAM or Pomperaug in the semi final. On the same day in the other bracket, fourth-ranked Joel Barlow (13-2-2) will take on Bethel (10-4-4) and Farmington (10-3-3) will match up against Brookfield (9-5-4).

The game will kick off at 2 p.m. at Fisher Meadows.
