Film: Race to Nowhere

Sponsored by the AHS PTO, Unplugged Learning Project, Avon Public Library, CC4A, Community of Concern, Town of Avon - Youth Services

Courtesy of a team of sponsors who knew instantly that this was a film Avon parents should see, Race To Nowhere, The Dark Side of America’s Achievement Culture, is coming to Avon on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. The film is being released solely through private screenings hosted by sponsor groups that buy rights to show the film. Avon will be the first public school system in Hartford County to screen the film; the second in the state.

The film, produced by mother-turned-filmmaker Vicki Abeles, takes a critical look at the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has overtaken our schools and our children’s lives.  It features poignant stories of young people who have been pushed to the brink; educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need; and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their children.
The film, rated PG-13, runs 85 minutes and will be followed by a moderated community discussion and dessert reception.  Admission is free but pre-registration is required. Tickets can be ordered on-line at http://rtnavonhigh.eventbrite.com/
