How Avon Fared in CAPT Testing

CAPT scores have been released, and over 94 percent of Avon students scored proficient or higher for mathematics, science, reading and writing.

Mathematics

The results are based on the scores of the 262 Avon students that took the math portion of CAPT this year, out of 39,972 statewide. Avon had the lowest percentage of students at or above proficiency it has had since 2007, though the percentage was still high at 94.3 and well above the statewide percentage of 80.3. In 2007, Avon had its highest percentage of recent years at 96.6 percent, followed by last year's even 96 percent, so the drop is not drastic. Avon has also scored higher in previous years, percentage-wise for students who scored at or above the district's goal. This year 76.3 percent scored at or above the goal, in comparison to the 79 range in 2007, 2008 and 2010, which reflects a slight dip. Avon did mark a higher percentage of students at or above goal though than 2009's 75.4 percent. Again, Avon had a higher percentage of students score in this category than statewide, which was at 49.6 percent.

Science

Out of 41,037 students who took the science section of the CAPT, 266 from Avon completed the science portion of the test. Over 96 percent of Avon students scored at or above proficiency, and 75.2 percent either achieved or exceeded the goal. That matches Avon's percentage from 2007 for students scoring at or above proficiency and is slightly lower than Avon's 78.3 percentage for students reaching the goal or exceeding it.

Reading Across the Disciplines

Avon marked the highest percentage of students at or above proficiency that it has scored in the past five years. In comparison to reaching the 95th percentile in 2007-10, 96.2 percent of Avon students were at or above proficiency. According to the results, 72.6 percent were at or above the goal, the lowest percentage since Avon marked a 71.2 in 2007, though that represented about a 3 percent drop from last year's 75.9.

Writing

Writing was a strong point for the 267 students who took this portion of the CAPT, as 97.4 percent of Avon students scored at or above proficiency. That is Avon's highest percentage of the four disciplines tested. Avon has scored in the 97 percent range for the past three years, an increase over 96.6 percent in 2007 and 95.9 in 2008. Numbers were also strong for the percentage of Avon students scoring at or above the goal, finishing with an even 88 percent. Writing was the only subject that the percentage of students in this category exceeded 80 percent.
