PHOTOS: Roaring Brook School Students Donate $630 to Foodshare

These photos were submitted by Roaring Brook teacher and Avon resident Deb Zacchio, who supervises the school's Student Council.

In three and a half weeks, students raised $630 for Bloomfield-based Foodshare.

The project was called "RBS Makes Positive Change to End Hunger," spearheaded by the Student Council, as part of the school-wide theme of a "hand in hand community," Deb Zacchio, Roaring Brook teacher and Student Council supervisor, wrote in an e-mail to Patch.

To say the student body surpassed its goal of $200 would be an understatement, as they donated over three times as much.

Students performed "odd jobs" at home to earn money to contribute. They wrote about how they raised their portion of the donation on a paper coin in school, which were displayed on the student council's bulletin board.

A representative from Foodshare visited the school Dec. 16 to educate them about the non-profit, which serves Hartford and Tolland Counties. The students learned their donation will help feed 63 individuals over a month.

"It was quite an experience for our Student Council to be able to serve those in need and to see the 'positive change' resulted in helping to end hunger," Zacchio wrote in her e-mail.
