Pine Grove Students Participate in Gifts of Love's Planting Day

Third graders from Pine Grove School in Avon walked to the Senior Center last week to plant their seedlings as part of the Lifecycle of a Plant program. The Community Farm of Simsbury teachers did the teaching and the raised beds were constructed by the Avon-Canton Rotary last year.

The Community Farm of Simsbury teachers deliver hands-on lessons concerning plant growth. The kids grow a seedling to be planted at the farm or at raised garden beds constructed at the Avon Senior Center. The program began in April with a 45-minute introductory lesson in each classroom, focusing on where food comes from and what helps plants grow. Then the follow-up lesson takes place in which students plant organic seeds in the classroom and learn the steps necessary to cultivate the seedlings. The program concludes with a field trip to the farm or Senior Center where students transplant their seedlings into the gardens where food is grown for Gifts of Love. All programs incorporate the importance of community service while educating students about sound nutritional choices, a healthy lifestyle and the issue of hunger in our community.

In addition, 2nd graders from Burns School in Hartford will be at the Farm planting their seedlings with the Avon school kids, providing valuable social interaction.
