Making Do-Rags Shows Second-Grade Cancer Patient's 'Can Do' Attitude

Morgan Platt, a Roaring Brook School student with a brain tumor, showed her fellow students how to make them Thursday.

When second grader Morgan Platt lost some of her hair due to radiation treatment for a brain tumor discovered last June, her neighbor made her a do-rag to cover it up.

In return, Platt wanted to make them for other people. On June 7, she taught fellow students at how to make do-rags. After wearing them on June 8, they will donate them to the oncology floor of Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford.

"They wanted to show their support for Morgan and started the 'Be Positive, Be Strong,' campaign," her mother, Kathy Platt said.

When the students and staff at Roaring Brook found out Platt had cancer, they wanted to help. They sold T-shirts that Platt designed, raising about $1,800 to donate to Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

The school also organized a movie night last week, showing Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, raising about $1,000 for the Connecticut Brain Tumor Alliance.

Morgan expressed to her mom after the movie night that she was overwhelmed by the support her school has given her.

"We're so blessed to have a school teaching kindness, generosity and compassion," Kathy Platt said, adding that those are "important life lessons."
