Say Goodbye to February and April Vacations for Avon Schools in 2014-15

A year from now, Avon Public Schools will move to a March vacation model that includes other changes to the 2014-15 calendar.

Next year will mark the last traditional February and April vacations for Avon Public Schools as the district plans to transition to a March break instead in 2014-15.

The school board approved the calendar change at its June 18 meeting, the Hartford Courant reported.

Avon Superintendent Gary Mala recommended the new calendar during the discussion on the options at the meeting.

According to Mala, the new version of the calendar includes the following changes:

  • The school year will start before Labor Day.
  • The district will have a long Presidents' Day weekend break instead of February vacation.
  • Avon Public Schools will move to a March vacation model.
  • April vacation will be removed.
  • The change will push a staff development day to the end of the school year.
Mala said that the new calendar "accommodates those who enjoy winter sports" and allows for an earlier end to the school year." Avon High School seniors graduated on June 27 due to snow days this year, but under the new calendar, school would end June 10 in 2014-15 if there are no snow days to make up.

Without April vacation, the new procedure for making up school cancellations will still involve tacking the first five make-up days onto the end of the year and any others would come out of the new March break.

Are you happy with the plans to have a March break instead of an April one? Tell us in the comments!
