Teacher Eats Onion to Celebrate AOF Movember Fundraising Efforts

The Avon Old Farms School community raised over $4,100 to support men’s health.

So, Ryan Davey, a Latin teacher and junior varsity football coach at the Avon all-boys private high school, who announced the news at an assembly Friday, fulfilled a promise to eat an onion in front of the whole school.

In November, dubbed this year as "Movember," "30 seniors and eight faculty members" grew out mustaches to raise money through "sponsorship and donations," according to a statement from the school. In doing so, the "‘mo bros’ raise vital awareness and funds for men's health issues, including prostate cancer and testicular cancer," the release said.

Faculty and staff contributed $1,000 of the amount raised in comparison to last year. This year, the Avon Old Farms community quadrupled the amount raised. Matt Cowles, of the Class of 2014, raised over $800 on his own.

John Gardner, associate headmaster, admission counselor and head varsity hockey coach, convinced him to eat "bites from a leek, a hot pepper, and a piece of raw ginger," as well.

"An unconventional yet charitable breakfast to kick off the vacation!" Avon Old Farms said in a statement.
