Tolland High School Fourth Quarter Honor Rolls

The school has provided the honor and high honor rolls for the last quarter of the school year.

Congratulations to the students who made honors and high honors for the fourth quarter!

My point is that if such a high percentage of kids are on the honor roll, then the "honor" isn't what it used to be. Schools and times change, but the honor roll was traditionally, to my knowledge, where exceptional work was recognized. If you have 100 kids in a class and 50 of them make honor roll, then somewhere the performance can't be seen as exceptional within that group of students then if only 20 of them met the standard for honor roll. My self esteem comment wasn't meant to be smart, but was intended to mention a mindset among administrators nationally that I learned of a number of years ago that wanted to diminish the difficulty of making the honor roll on the basis that kids were demoralized when they didn't make it and resulted in a loss of self esteem which they felt hurt the educational process. So, the standards were changed to encompass more students. ( I don't know if this happened in Tolland, but I know it was discussed in other places). What you experienced in the 80s might have been the result of that mindset. I went to high school in the 70s and the honor roll was relegated to a much smaller group. My three children went to another high school in 2000s and had varying experiences regarding the honor roll. I can say consistently that the percentage of students in their classes making the roll was a smaller percentage then those making it in Tolland at that time as well as now.

I guess we should agree to disagree. In my opinion, the only comments posted regarding the honor roll list should be congratulations to the students for their hard work! I continue to find your mindset ignorant and you can continue to disagree with me. We don't know each other..... well maybe we do but you are posting anonymously so who knows. Back to what matters, congrats Tolland students on all your hard work!

Its interesting the ease you have in calling someone with an opinion different than yours "ignorant". Not to mention, you appear to not mind restricting free speech on the basis that you deem only a certain response as appropriate to be posted in regards to a particular matter. I wish you well.

Ha! This is the ONLY time my son has made it and he had to get all A's and B's to do it! Nice try.
