Vote to Help Avon Student Win College Scholarship!

Avon High School student Colleen Norton has entered the Hood Sportsmanship Scholarship Contest. Voting for the contest ends today (Monday) at 3 p.m.

Avon High School student Colleen Norton has the chance to be possibly the first Avon student to win a sportsmanship scholarship contest sponsored by Hood and she needs your help.

Norton wrote an essay for the about her involvement for the Hood Sportsmanship Scholarship about her four years of volunteering for the Special Olympics, according to her mother, Maureen Norton. Voting is part of the process to determine the award recipients and it closes Monday at 3 p.m.

The top 10 applicants following the voting period will move on to an interview round. Three Connecticut students will win a $5,000 college scholarships.

"She really deserves this Sportsmanship scholarship - she is such a wonderful sport on and off the court or field," Norton wrote in an email to Patch.

Colleen Norton's involvement in Special Olympics is not her only way of showing she cares about others. In a high school girls varsity girls basketball game against Torrington earlier this year, the players each wore a green shirt printed with the name of one of the Sandy Hook shooting victims to remember the lives lost in the Dec. 14 tragedy. Norton spearheaded the initiative with teammate Alana Pulling.
