Avon Field Hockey Wins One for Coach Martin

The Avon High School team is ranked first in its conference.

Varsity field hockey took home another win for Avon during spirit week, defeating Suffield 1-0 Thursday night.

It was also a win for many of the players' former coach, Colleen Martin, who died last week of colon and liver cancer.

The Homecoming win secures Avon the top rank in the NCCC.

Martin was a physical education teacher at Avon Middle School and coached many of the players at the middle school between 2008 and 2010. She also used to coach the junior varsity at the high school in the '90s.

The players raised money for the Colleen Martin Scholarship and breast cancer in her honor through a bake sale and donations given at the game.
