Avon High School Sports Roundup

Ice hockey team advances to state semifinals, will play at Yale's Ingall's Rink on Tuesday

The Windsor-East Granby-Avon ice hockey team is a win away from playing for a state championship.

The Wave earned the third seed in the state Division III tournament after an impressive regular season and earned a first-round bye. The team then booked a spot in the semifinals with a 3-1 victory over No. 6 seed Newtown on Thursday at the Trinity Community Sports Complex in Hartford.

The Wave (17-4) face Staples-Weston-Shelton (15-6-0) in the semis.

Against Newtown, the Wave jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and led 3-0 before the Nighthawks got on the board late in the second period.

Adam Lebowitz scored the first of his two goals just under five minutes into the game to give the Wave a 1-0 lead. Jeffery Demers made it 2-0 with 4:22 remaining in the opening period.

Boys Basketball:

The Falcons advanced to the NCCC final before falling to Enfield and then were knocked out in the first round of the state Class L tournament by Wilby of Waterbury on Tuesday.

Avon (13-11) was led by Brandon Feinberg with nine points against Wilby, which was knocked out in the second round by unbeaten New London (21-0), 76-73.

The first-round loss in the state tournament was disappointing but the Falcons did have some postseason success in the NCCC tournament, posting a pair of wins to get to the final.

“We ran into a very poised and hot team in Enfield. They came out of the gate and hit shots all night long. They were the better team on the floor that night,” Avon coach Chris Vozzolo said. “We were happy to play in the NCCC final game. Our team, which has struggled with consistency all year, got a couple nice wins through some solid defense and had the opportunity to play in that game.”

Swimming/Diving

The Falcons were set to compete in the Class M state meet Saturday afternoon at Masuk High School in Monroe.

Avon had six individual qualifiers for the state meet: Zac Cesaro in the 200 free and 100 back; Tristan Chambers in the 50 free and 100 free; Jordan Alter in the 200 IM and 100 Fly; Nicolas Sauerbrunn in the 200 free and 100 breast; Jon Hla in the 100 breast; and Kristen Wall in the 100 back.

“We have a good group of swimmer and a number of them are likely to make finals and we will hopefully have one or two make it to the state open,” Avon assistant coach Diana Cesaro said. “Maybe a relay too. We will see on Saturday.”

In diving, John Andrade finished fifth in Class M with 341.40 points.
