Avon High School Sports Roundup for Feb. 14-19

Girls hoops has tough time with Bacon Academy while wrestlers have strong showing in Class L meet.

It was an interesting week for the Falcons as the girls basketball team got a taste of what could await them in the state tournament while a pair of wrestlers advanced to the State Open with strong finishes in the state Class L tournament.

The boys basketball team is wrapping up its regular season as tournament time approaches.

Bacon Academy (20-0) is the top-seed in Class L, while the Falcons look like they will end up with the fifth seed.

It marked the third time the Bobcats have finished a regular season undefeated, a feat they also pulled off in 1974-75 and 1998-99.

“We were definitely outclassed at Bacon,” Avon coach Frank Waters said. “They beat us in transition and off the dribble and we were tentative offensively.”

If anything good did come from the loss for Waters it was the play of senior Maggie Hartman, who is coming off an ACL injury and had a team high 11 points including three 3-pointers. Freshman Caroline Schaefer also played tough and had six points.

“Maggie has been back for about three weeks and is just regaining her conditioning and confidence,” Waters said. “She gives us another veteran presence and a much needed shooter and scorer to complement Caroline Jadovich.”

The Falcons bounced back and crushed Bolton, 67-43, Thursday to win the NCCC regular season title for the 10th time in 12 seasons.

“At Bolton we were a different team probably playing our best game,” Waters said. “We executed well offensively, shot well, and played great defense.’

Caroline Jadovich shot 5-of-7 from the arc and scored 18 points and Chelsea Foster made all three 3-pointers she took and added 13 points.

Avon will host No. 8 seed Granby on Monday in an NCCC Tournament quarterfinal doubleheader. A win would put the Falcons in the semifinals on Wednesday, also at Avon.

The NCCC tournament final is scheduled for Friday with the state tournament set to begin on Feb. 28.

Boys Basketball:

The Falcons (10-8) suffered a 64-54 loss at Ellington on Tuesday before rebounding with a 74-29 win over Bolton on Friday.

Avon hosts Somers on Tuesday and closes out the regular season at Granby on Thursday. The Bears posted a

48-42 victory over the Falcons on Feb. 3 in Avon.

Wrestling:

The Falcons finished eighth at the Class L State Championship meet with 93.5 points. New Milford won the team title with 216 points.

Ryan Pearson advanced to the final at 160 pounds and Dave St. Onge made the final at 189 and both wrestlers earned runner-up finishes and advanced to the State Open. Pearson will be the sixth-seed at 160 at the Open while St. Onge is seeded seventh at 189. The Open is set for Friday and Saturday at the New Haven Athletic Center.

Avon’s James Gendler defeated Ray Laudato of Masuk, 4-2, for fifth place at 140 and Joe Murphy pinned Jacob Kalleher of East Lyme at 2:37 to earn fifth at 152.

Ice Hockey:

The Wave are up to number three in the state Division III rankings and have reeled off six straight wins and have also won eight of their last nine.

The Wave’s only loss in their recent hot streak was to Milford Co-op on Jan. 29, 5-4, in overtime. The Wave avenged that loss with a 7-3 victory over Milford Co-op on Wednesday.

The Wave next faces E.O. Smith-Tolland-Windham on Wednesday at UConn and is at Enfield on Friday.
