Avon Little League Battles to Even State Championship Series

Fairfield American won the first game in the three-game state final, but the Avon 11-12 team has a chance at a comeback.

Avon's U-12 Mission III All Stars had its first loss of the Little League season Saturday as Fairfield American claimed a 8-0 win at state championships.

But it is not by any means over for Avon, which went into the game with a 13-game undefeated streak.

The boys will play again on Sunday night for a chance to even the score and take the three-game championship series to a third game Monday night.

Saturday was the first game in the series and Avon had a "tough first inning" in the rain-shortened match-up that ended in the top of the fifth inning, according to team manager Steve Harris. Fairfield American capitalized on "five errors" Avon made and scored "six unearned runs," recording eight runs total first inning.

Avon didn't recover from Fairfield American's early lead.

"Avon was not able to get anything going with the bats, only getting one hit a single by Will Boone off the Fairfield pitching," Harris said.

However, for Harris and the Avon team the game is only the beginning of the state championship series. The boys will play Fairfield American again at 7 p.m. Sunday in New Haven, looking to to "push the series to a deciding third game on Monday night."

"This was Avon first loss of the summer after a 13 and 0 run," Harris said. "The good news is that Avon has a chance to even the series [Sunday] night."
