Avon Sports Digest Roundup for Feb. 7-12, 2011

Girls hoops rolling toward tournament time and wrestlers continue NCCC streak.

With the girls basketball team and wrestling team continuing to roll, it was a pretty good week for Avon High School sports teams.

Greg Rendeiro and Brianna Noonan each had individual success in indoor track with NCCC Championship titles.

The Falcons finally got to play Granby after the game was postponed twice due to the weather and Avon edged the Bears, 49-42, at Granby on Wednesday. On Friday the Falcons outlasted Suffield at home, 41-39.

“I wouldn't say it was our finest week, but we did get two wins against scrappy teams,” Avon coach Frank Waters said. “With the exception of Caroline Jadovich we are struggling offensively right now, especially from the foul line.”

Jadovich poured in 28 points against Granby and scored 20 in the win over Suffield while hitting four 3-pointers in each game.

Waters also said Emily Jordan was solid in both games and she had seven points and 11 rebounds in the win over the Bears.

Boys Basketball:

Avon (9-7) split a pair of games last week, trouncing South Windsor, 61-38, on Tuesday to wrap up a three-game homestand with a 2-1 record.

The Falcons then visited Suffield on Friday and came up on the short end of a 49-47 decision.

Against South Windsor the Falcons played a complete game, executing well on offense while limiting South Windsor on the defensive end. Jacob Forchheimer led Avon with 14 points while Tyler D’Onofrio chipped in with 15 rebounds and eight assists.

“We had our best offensive showing of the season against South Windsor,” Avon coach Chris Vozzolo said. “Jacob looked to be aggressive early in the game and our whole team responded well to it.  Tyler was great too.”

Against Suffield, Avon shot well from the line (80 percent) but lost a tough game.

The Falcons were down 12 early in the second quarter and spent the rest of the game fighting to get back into it. Vozzolo was not too upset with the defeat as his team executed well down the stretch but just didn’t get a few key shots to fall.

“We were clawing back until the end,” Vozzolo said. “We had some smart, solid possessions late in the game but just came up short.”

Indoor Track:

The Avon boys team finished seventh at the NCCC Championships at Hillhouse High School in New Haven on Monday. The effort was highlighted by Greg Rendeiro who won the league title in the long jump.

The Falcons girls took eighth at the NCCC meet paced by Brianna Noonan, who won the high jump title.

Wrestling:

Avon (14-8, 7-0 NCCC) defeated Canton, 60-17, for its 27th straight league victory.

The Falcons had four wins by pin and benefitted from six forfeits by the Warriors.

Issac Davis (171), Dave Sinoch (189), James Gendler (140) and Joe Murphy (152) recorded pins for the Falcons against Canton.

Ice Hockey:

The Wave have won four straight and six of their last seven with just an overtime loss in that span.

The Wave (10-3) are up to number four in the D III rankings in the state and are 8-0 this season against other teams in D III.

The wave crushed Shepaug-Litchfield on Saturday, 12-1, and posted a 6-1 triumph over Rocky Hill-RHAM-Middletown  on Wednesday. The wave started the week with a 7-2 win over E.O. Smith-Tolland-Windham on Monday.

Swimming:

The Falcons posted a 101-76 victory over Berlin on Feb. 4 and dropped a hard-fought meet at Middletown, 96-90, on Tuesday.
