Avon Students Named to Courant's Scholar-Athlete List

Two seniors recognized for success and achievement on the field and in the classroom.

Two Avon students were named to the Hartford Courant's scholar-athlete list for 2013. The students who must have lettered in at least one sport, are chosen based on grade point average and academic achievement.

In Avon, the students are Mary Margaret Stoll, a senior, who plays field hockey and outdoor track, and William DeStefano, a senior who plays football, basketball and baseball.

Stoll's field hockey team went 11-3-2 and was the No. 4 seed in the state Class M tournament. The Falcons advanced to the semifinals before losing to No. 1 (and eventual champion) Wilton 2-1.

DeStefano's three teams were also successful. The Falcons' football team went 10-0 in the regular season, earning the No. 6 seed in the state Class L playoffs, where Avon lost to New Canaan 16-7 in the quarterfinals.

In boys basketball, the Falcons went 16-4 during the regular season, which was good enough for the No. 6 seed in the state Class L tournament.

Finally, Avon was the No. 6 seed in the state Class L tournament with a 13-5 regular season record. The Falcons advanced to the second round of the tournament before falling to No. 12 Wethersfield.
