Avon Wins NCCC Wrestling Tournament

Teams met Saturday in Enfield.

Four Avon wrestlers took first place and four others were runners-up, leading the Falcons to an overall team victory in the North Central Connecticut Conference championships Saturday at Enfield High School.

Tyler Mattioda (103 lbs.), Alex Heston (119), Je Murphy (152) and Ryan Pearson (160) won individual divisions for Avon, while James Gendler (140), Isaac Davis (171), David St. Onge (189) and Mike Follert (215) each placed second.

Avon's team score of 209.0 points nearly doubled that of runner-up Somers (118.0).

The Spartans were led by first-place winners Nick Zachary (112), Kyle Foster (189) and Ken Vollaro (215), while Hunter Frasca (103) and Anthony Andrade (119) took runner-up honors.

Despite having no division winners, Suffield's depth led the Wildcats to a third-place finish with 110.0 points, led by runners-up Ryan Hunihan (130) and Dan D'Ostuni (135).

Canton (fourth, 109.0) had individual winners in three consecutive weight classes with Matt White (125), Nate Getler (130) and Brian Fitzpatrick (135), while Ben Corbett (152) placed second.

East Windsor (fifth, 106.0) was led by a victory by Seth Miller (140), and second place finishes by Eric Strba (112) and Andrew Arcari (285).

Enfield's Tony Young (285) scored the fastest pin in the finals, defeating Arcari in just 19 seconds. Tony Perrone (145) was second for the Raiders.

Christopher Brown of Granby took first at 145, and Tucker Fontanella of Stafford prevailed at 171. Ellington's one-man team, Matt Janiga, placed second at 160.

The state class meets begin Friday afternoon.
