Moore's Touchdown Gives Avon Early Lead, but New Canaan Wins State Quarterfinal

After Colin Moore's early touchdown in the Division L quarterfinal Wednesday, it looked like Avon High's undefeated streak in the Pequot Uncas football league would continue into the state tournament.

But opponent New Canaan made a late-game comeback to win the game 16-7 and advance to the semifinal.

Moore's scoring opportunity happened fast. He sped down the right flank of the Simsbury High School field in the first quarter to put Avon on the scoreboard 7-0, according to the Collinsville Press.

In the third quarter, New Canaan took the lead with a touchdown and two extra points, according to the Collinsville Press. With less than four minutes remaining in the game, New Canaan scored another, the sports website reported.

Avon was seeded third going into the tournament and New Canaan was ranked sixth, according to ciac.com.

That was Avon's first loss this year.

The Falcons won all 10 conference games before advancing to the state quarterfinal in Simsbury, according to the CIAC website.
