More Than 600 Participants Expected at Winding Trails Women's Triathlon

The event is spearheaded by the Hartford Marathon Foundation. Read on to find out which roads will be affected during the triathlon.

A half mile swim in Dunning Lake, 12 miles of cycling and a flat 5K trail run.

That's what over 600 women will have to do to complete the Hartford Marathon Foundation's Women's Triathlon at Winding Trails in Farmington on Sunday, Sept. 8.

The distance and athletic exertion required may be challenging, but for many woman it is worth it.

"The Women's Tri offers a great sense of camaraderie for women," said Hartford Marathon Foundation spokesperson Brie Barash. "Many train together in the months leading up to the event and encourage each other along the way. It's a non-judgmental and non-intimidating environment. When they cross the finish line, they feel empowered and energized that they can do anything they put their minds and bodies to. It's a check off the bucket list for many!"

For the first time since the event was established at Winding Trails in 2007, the foundation is partnering with the Pajama Program to collect new pajamas and books for children.

"Runners are invited to bring their donations the day of the race," Barash said.

It's not too late to get involved, Barash said. Women can sign up on the day of the triathlon. The race starts at 7:30 a.m.

While the race is going on between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., "traffic may be delayed or detoured" on Farmington Avenue, Winding Trails Road, Brickyard Road and Town Farm Road in Farmington and Harris Rod, West Avon Road, Burnham Road, Old Farms Road and Tillotson Road in Avon, according to the Hartford Marathon Foundation. Intersecting roads might also be affected. For more information on the traffic impact of the event, please click on the link provided.

The foundation recommends seeking alternate routes and asks drivers to be cautious as hundreds of bikers race in the triathlon.
