The First Day of School Approaches and More Avon News!

Here's what you should know about what's ahead for the week before your kids go back to school.

Oh my, what nice weather we've been having. What a great last weekend of summer before the schools reopen. 

What are your kids most looking forward to about the school year? Tell us in the comments!

So, the first day of school is Aug. 29! Are you ready? How about your kids? This letter from Avon Superintendent Gary Mala to parents has a lot of useful information to get you prepared. 

The Board of Finance is meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Selectmen's Chamber at Town Hall, building 1. The board will review a $13,079.50 supplemental appropriation request for a traffic counter and radar speed monitor. Click here to view the rest of the agenda. 

Are you new to Avon? The Avon Newcomers has a meeting on Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. to welcome you to the neighborhood as a way to meet people and get involved in the community. 

The Farmington Valley VNA is offering free blood pressure screenings at the Avon Senior Center on Tuesday at noon. 

There are a couple of fundraisers coming up for local organizations:

Dine and drink at Red Stone Pub in Simsbury on Tuesday Aug. 27 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the FOCUS Center for Autism in Canton. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m.

Also on Tuesday, all proceeds from sales at Ben & Jerry's in West Hartford will benefit the Emanuel Synagogue Scholarship Fund. Sounds like a good night for Americone Dream or name your favorite flavor!
