Animal Control is a part of the Avon Police Department. Beverly LaPlume is a contracting animal control officer for the Avon and Canton Police Departments. She operates the canine shelter on Arch Road in Avon. She is a sworn officer with the Avon Police Department and has the authority to write tickets for pet owner violations and animal cruelty. Animal Control officers in Avon have the authority to pull abused dogs from their homes.

The shelter has a no-kill policy. There is space for eight dogs, in addition to two spots for dogs that need to be quarantined. The majority of the dogs taken in by the shelter are pit bull mixes because the dogs are often mistakenly perceived as aggressive and some owners are unable to receive homeowner's insurance because of them. Most of the dogs taken into the shelter were lost and are picked up by the owners, and any others are adopted out through Pet Finder. Before dogs are adopted out, LaPlume takes the dogs to Animal General in Avon to be tested and receive the proper vaccinations. The shelter does not accept surrendered dogs, however the shelter can provide information for Pet Finder.

Corey, a terrier mix rescued by LaPlume, rides with LaPlume on every call. When she puts him on the ground the lost dogs often approach, at ease.

The shelter also donates pet food to families in need of assistance so that they can care for their dogs even if they are laid off or struggling financially. Animal control also accepts donated food, bedding and dog toys for the shelter.
