The Avon Free Public Library dates back to 1798, when Samuel Bishop opened a library in his home, offering 111 books to share with the public, according to the library website. The current site of the library on Country Club Road, close to Avon High School and Middle School, was purchased in 1973. On Nov. 20, 1978, the library was recognized as a town department and maintained its identity as a private institution. Now, over 4 million volumes of books are accessible via the inter-library loan database, which include over 160 libraries in Connecticut.
