St. Matthew Lutheran Church, originally founded in Collinsville in 1885 as the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Matthew, moved to its current location on Route 177 in Avon in 1963, according to the church website. The church is a member congregation of the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Pastor William S. Carter, a Brooklyn native, has been a minister since 1972 in the state of Connecticut and came to St. Matthew in 1984. St. Matthew serves over 250 families. In addition to its Sunday worship services, the church has Sunday school, a choir, youth choir and youth ministry. For those interested in becoming ministers, St. Matthew participates in the ELCA's internship program. Interns are actively on staff for one year at St. Matthew before completing their final year of preparation to become a minister.
