Avon Science Fair

Yesterday thirteen Avon Middle School students competed in the first annual Avon Science Fair. Begun as a Girl Scout Gold Award project and run with the help of volunteers from the Avon High School Science Club, the fair was designed to promote a creative approach to science.

Students presented and answered questions about their projects for the judges and other attendees. They had performed an array of experiments involving everything from bacteria growth to the generation of clean energy. After the initial round of judging, everyone gathered for scientific demonstrations courtesy of the AHS volunteers involving the catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (creating “elephant’s toothpaste” and a “magic lamp”), balloons full of non-Newtonian liquid, and writing secret messages with potassium nitrate.

“The Effects of Auditory and Visual Stimulation on Studying” took home first prize for its clear adherence to the scientific method. Many of the other projects were notable for the innovative thinking and problem-solving involved.
