Avon High School's 'Oliver!' Addresses Hunger Issue On and Off Stage

Cast and crew are collecting non-perishable food donations to Gifts of Love at each of the shows this weekend to help local families in need put food on the table.

As Oliver Twist and the orphans struggle with hunger in Avon High School's spring musical "Oliver!," Gifts of Love is experiencing food shortages in its pantry as donations typically decrease in the warmer months.

So, the Avon theater community is stepping in to give the non-profit what Oliver asks for, "some more" food.

The production is collecting non-perishable food donations at each of its shows this weekend for the food pantry.

"The food collection idea was inspired by the theme of hunger in the show - and it ties in to the message of compassion that I get from 'Oliver!'," Avon High School Director Jill Paterson wrote in an email to Patch.

The food will feed Gifts of Love's clients, local families who are struggling financially.

"It's my understanding that they really need canned food right now," Paterson said. "Also, because I'm an environmentalist, I am asking that food donations be brought either bagless or in paper or cloth bags as opposed to plastic bags which are very detrimental to the environment."

"Oliver!" runs Friday and Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2 p.m.
