Avon Schools Report 158 Kids Signed Up for Full-Day Kindergarten for Fall 2013

This fall will mark the first year of full-day kindergarten for Avon Public Schools.

Avon Public Schools will start offering full-day kindergarten this fall and at least 158 students are registered for it so far, according to school officials.

Pine Grove School will offer four sections of full-day kindergarten and Roaring Brook School will offer five, according to Avon Superintendent Gary Mala. As of July 1, 86 students were registered for full-day and four were signed up for half-day. Pine Grove School will have at least 72 students doing full-day kindergarten next year and three families have requested to have their children do half-day kindergarten.

The full-day schedule will last six-and-a-half hours in comparison to two-and-a-half for half-day.

Mala said that both half-day and full-day students will take the bus to get to and from school and the transition won't have "significant impact as buses have ridership capacity." However, transportation costs are projected to decrease by $120,000 "due to elimination of midday runs," Mala said.

Many parents had been asking the district to offer full-day kindergarten and many Avon parents rallied for it over the past school year in particular, wearing stickers in support of it to school board meetings.
