CAPT Scores Higher, Results Mixed on CMT in Avon Schools

The town well exceeds the state averages on both tests.

Standardized test scores are in for Avon, and results are mixed, with some grades increasing from 2012 to 2013 and other dropping considerably. Scores still far exceed state averages and in most cases are slightly higher than those of its neighbors.

The Connecticut Department of Education released the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) and the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) scores for all Connecticut school districts on Tuesday.

On the CAPT test, which is given to 10th graders, Avon students improved, with more than 86 percent of students reaching goal in math (up from 80 percent), 82 percent in science (up from 73 percent), 73.5 percent in reading (up from 69.7) and 88.4 percent in writing (up from 86.9).

However, the CMTs were a different story. Scores for most of the grades increased slightly but grade five saw a significant drop. Increases or slight decreases of a couple of points returned in grades six, seven and eight.

In math, for example, fifth-grade scores dropped by 10 points (from 92 to 82 percent) of those meeting goal. Those meeting proficiency remained the same at 95 percent. There was a seven point drop in reading, a six point drop in writing and a 10 point drop in science for those reaching goal, as well. Proficiency in those categories decreased between just one and four points.

In grade six, the changes between 2012 and 2013 were minimal, with scores in the 90s.

The CMTs are administered to all students from grade three to grade eight. Students are tested in math, reading and writing, and in middle school, they are tested in science as well.

Students are labeled based on their performance. The labels, in descending order, are advanced, goal, proficient, basic and below basic.
