Avon Middle School Students Compete in First Annual Avon Science Fair

The event was run with the help of volunteers from the Avon High School Science Club and was designed to promote a creative approach to science.

Last week, 13 Avon Middle School students competed in the first annual Avon Science Fair, which began as a Girl Scout Gold Award project.

The event was run with the help of volunteers from the Avon High School Science Club and was designed to promote a creative approach to science.

Students, who had performed an array of experiments involving everything from bacteria growth to the generation of clean energy, presented and answered questions about their projects for the judges and other attendees.

After the initial round of judging, everyone gathered for scientific demonstrations, courtesy of the AHS volunteers, involving the catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (creating “elephant’s toothpaste” and a “magic lamp”), balloons full of non-Newtonian liquid, and writing secret messages with potassium nitrate.
